Since typography is the foundation of me and my friend’s daily design work, we wanted to challenge ourselves to learn typeface design from scratch. We wanted to master the rules properly, just to break them. Inspired by the raw energy of Velvetyne Type Foundry’s Since typography is the foundation of me and my friend’s daily design work, we wanted to challenge ourselves to learn typeface design from scratch. We wanted to master the rules properly, just to break them. Inspired by the raw energy of Velvetyne Type Foundry’s Picnic, Pixrot is an experimental display typeface reimagined in a fluid, pixelated form.

Instead of keeping the letters static, we created a rule-based system where they actively flip, repeat, stretch, and rearrange. We established strict grid constraints to play with pixel shapes, finding ways to stretch and distort individual letters while making sure you could still actually read them.

To see how this single system would behave across different environments, we pushed it across static layouts, physical merchandise, and kinetic motion graphics. The final result is a cohesive project built entirely from one evolving idea, showing how a rigid, pixelated grid can actually feel fluid and alive when you play with motion.
